Rittenhouse Square Analysis

I divided the square into five areas, consist of each quadrant named after the street it faces and the central terrace.
The square’s prime location and its nearby land use are the key factors that attract users to the square.
After collecting details on surrounding land uses, temperature, sunshades and traffic condition at the moment, I counted the number of users present in each quadrant. Land use appears to have affected users’ choice of their activity location, as the quadrants opposite to the streets with more diverse uses also enjoys more usage.
I also counted the number of users passing through each path in both directions at eight designated spots, in order to get a better picture on the circulation pattern.
There are a number of temporal factors affecting users’ behaviour, including the time of the day, weather and the availability of sunlight.
Last but not least, increased surveillance and security has successfully deterred crime inside the square, serving as the key factor that lower users’ likelihood to commit or expose to crime (figure below).
